Under the Sea
Young Nemo ventures into open waters and is unexpectedly swept into a whirlwind of adventure and peril. Students in this creative writing and publishing workshop will be inspired by the deep sea as they write stories about sea creatures who embark on adventures of their own. What places will they venture to and what obstacles will they encounter on their way?
Learning objectives
Specific to this workshop:
  • Primary focus on character, setting and plot development
  • Introduction to plot arc
  • Creating characters from factual research
  • Learn and apply different planning and writing techniques, including using storyboards, describing settings, combining fact and fiction, and showing characters' personalities through their thoughts, reactions and dialogue.
As a writer:
  • Be introduced to ECP process of writing, revising and publishing a story
  • Stretch creative thinking and take creative risks
  • Become aware of the disconnect between what the writer knows/imagines and what the reader knows if it’s not written down
  • Express ideas with detail
  • Follow a simple story structure
  • Sequence ideas logically and step-by-step
  • Use vocabulary that they know in their writing
  • Improve writing skills through individualised feedback from the teacher
  • Correct identified technical errors in their work to prepare writing to be published
As a learner:
  • Develop creativity and collaboration through a workshop environment
  • Learn to look at own work critically and consider how to improve it
  • Learn to be open to and respond to constructive feedback
  • Gain confidence as a writer by writing and publishing a story in a booklet for a real audience
