Inspired by Craig Smith's hilarious book, The Wonky Donkey, this summer creative writing and publishing workshop for ages 6-8 will teach students all about suffixes and syllables as they explore new vocab and collaboratively create a story about their own neater, sweeter, fitter (or fatter?) critters...
Learning objectives
Specific to this workshop:
  • Understand how words are formed in English
  • Become familiar with common suffixes and how they are spelled
  • Learn new vocabulary
  • Define or explain new vocabulary with a specific example or scenario
  • Play with rhythm, rhyme and onomatopoeia
  • Work collaboratively with classmates to tie various ideas together to create a story
As a writer:
  • Be introduced to ECP process of writing, revising and editing a story to be published
  • Stretch creative thinking and take creative risks
  • Express ideas with detail
  • Follow a simple story structure
  • Sequence ideas logically and step-by-step
  • Use vocabulary that they know in their writing
  • Improve writing skills through individualised feedback from the teacher
  • Correct identified technical errors in their work to prepare writing to be published
As a learner:
  • Develop creativity and collaboration through a workshop environment
  • Learn to look at own work critically and consider how to improve it
  • Learn to be open to and respond to constructive feedback
  • Gain confidence as a writer by writing and publishing a story in a booklet for a real audience
