Poetry Writing & Analysis

Reading and writing poetry go hand in hand in this introductory poetry analysis workshop. Students will learn some poetic devices and practise identifying them in given poems. Over the course of the workshop, students will write structured paragraphs of their analysis as well as try their hand at applying the poetic devices in poems of their own.
Learning objectives

  • Be introduced to poetic devices and poetry analysis
  • Identify poetic devices in given poems
  • Consider the purpose of poets’ use of devices
  • Experiment with language use and write different types of poetry
  • Apply poetic devices in own poems
  • Learn and apply clear paragraph and essay structure
  • Revise writing for precision and clarity
  • Understand appropriate formality for literary responses and essays

  • Be introduced to ECP process of writing and revising
  • Stretch creative thinking and take creative risks
  • Experiment with new techniques, devices and structure
  • Improve writing skills through individualised feedback from the teacher
