Play & Write: Dim Sum Go
Overview
In this Play & Write creative writing and board game workshop in collaboration with Press Start Hong Kong, the family board game Sushi Go gets a makeover as students help design menu items and cards for our customised Dim Sum Go game. They create characters, play the game and write about what happens as their characters participate in the Dim Sum Dash--a dim sum eating competition of Hong Kong's hungriest!
Learning objectives
Specific to this workshop:
  • Collaboratively create and design menu items for the board game
  • Use the events of the game to inspire the story writing
  • Primary focus of the story is on character development
  • Learn and apply different planning and writing techniques, including sensory description, using catch phrases and nicknames to support characterisation, and showing characters' personalities through dialogue and description
As a writer:
  • Be introduced to ECP process of writing and revising a story
  • Stretch creative thinking and take creative risks
  • Become aware of the disconnect between what the writer knows/imagines and what the reader knows if it’s not written down
  • Express ideas with detail
  • Follow a simple story structure
  • Sequence ideas logically and step-by-step
  • Use vocabulary that they know in their writing
  • Improve writing skills through individualised feedback from the teacher
As a learner:
  • Develop creativity and collaboration through a workshop environment
  • Learn to look at own work critically and consider how to improve it
