Once Upon a Times
Overview
In this creative writing and journalism workshop, students learn to write like real journalists and publish a creative newspaper based on fairy tales and nursery rhymes! In this workshop, students write news articles, identify different angles, and learn how to write in an objective style. Besides news stories, students also examine other genres within a newspaper, such as advice columns, ads, horoscopes and sports news.
Learning objectives
Specific to this workshop:
  • Primary focus on creative journalism
  • Build on existing knowledge of fairy tales and nursery rhymes
  • Develop an understanding of different text types within a newspaper and the characteristics and features of each type, including news articles, interviews, feature articles and advertisements
  • Learn and apply key principles of journalistic writing, including interview techniques, differentiation between fact and opinion, use of quotations, story angles and perspective
As a writer:
  • Be introduced to ECP process of writing, revising and publishing writing
  • Stretch creative thinking and take creative risks
  • Express ideas with detail and specificity
  • Slow down to elaborate each part of a story fully
  • Improve writing skills through individualised feedback from the teacher
  • Revise writing for continuity, consistency and focus
  • Practise proofreading skills and correct identified technical errors in their work to prepare writing to be published
As a learner:
  • Develop creativity and collaboration through a workshop environment
  • Learn to look at own work critically and consider how to improve it
  • Learn to be open to and respond to constructive feedback
  • Gain confidence as a writer by writing and publishing a story in a newspaper for a real audience
