Informational Writing: Sharks!
Overview
This summer informational writing workshop will open students’ eyes to the incredible world of sharks and challenge them to present information in a fun and engaging way. Students will each research and write pieces that highlight the most amazing and bizarre facts about different species of sharks.
Learning objectives
Specific to this workshop:
  • Primary focus on research and informational writing
  • Identify reliable sources and gather information on specific research questions
  • Learn to distinguish between relevant and irrelevant details
  • Take concise notes from multiple sources
  • Write up notes into logical paragraphs, using own words
  • Use and consistently maintain a factual tone
  • Consider the purpose and use of labelled diagrams
  • Find and incorporate fun facts to engage the reader
  • Reference sources and create a bibliography
As a writer:
  • Be introduced to ECP process of writing and revising
  • Improve writing skills through individualised feedback from the teacher
  • Practise proofreading and editing skills
As a learner:
  • Develop critical thinking and collaboration skills through a workshop environment
  • Learn to look at own work critically and consider how to improve it
  • Learn to be open to and respond to constructive feedback
  • Gain confidence as a writer by writing and sharing writing with their peers
