Beyond Book Club (Ages 9-11)
Overview
Curling up with a good book can be pure enjoyment in itself, but fully understanding and interpreting a story means more than just racing to the finish. This summer, we will look at two texts: Cricket in Times Square by George Selden and From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg. Over one week, students will read and discuss an excerpt from one of these novels "book club-style", with the addition of short guided writing assignments. As the introductory course to our Literary Analysis curriculum, the goal of this workshop is for students to learn to talk and write about literature, begin analysing characters, and connect their reading to their own lives through writing personal responses.
Learning objectives
  • Develop close reading skills, including making inferences and finding supporting evidence from the text
  • Do introductory analysis of characters and learn how to write structured responses to literature
  • Demonstrate comprehension and character analysis through creative writing
  • Connect life to literature through personal responses
  • Explore vocabulary in context and learn strategies to support vocabulary development
