Creative Writing and Publishing Workshops

The Trumpet: Creative Magazine Publishing

Students in these creative writing and magazine publishing workshops will be key contributors to ECP’s magazine, The Trumpet! Over the term, students will focus on four particular writing skills and write different text types, such as stories, newspaper articles and poems. They will revise and edit all of their pieces, but select their two favourites for publication in the magazine, which will be published in print! (For ages 6-11)

Diaries from the Wild

Doreen Cronin’s Diary of a Worm and others in the series serve as inspiration for students in this creative writing and boo publishing workshop. Focused on developing rich and interesting characters, this workshop challenges students to give the reader an inside look into a character’s life—through the secrets of his or her diary.

Special Workshop: Writing & Drama

ECP x Baumhaus: Story & Drama Workshop

ECP has teamed up with Baumhaus to bring you a one-of-a-kind drama and story experience this summer! Following up on our popular one-day Story & Drama sessions, this 4- or 5-day workshop will immerse your child in their imagination while strengthening their language, storytelling and listening skills.

Over each week, your 4- to 6-year-old will create a story with ECP and learn to act out the adventure with Baumhaus DramaLab, culminating in a mini performance to showcase their creations and newly gained self-confidence.

In the 6- to 8-year-old sessions, students will be introduced to the art of script writing as they collaboratively create a story with ECP and bring it to the stage in the DramaLab sessions. Dates: Aug 13-17, Aug 20-24, Aug 27-31 Time: 4:00-4:45pm (ages 4-6) or 4:45-5:30pm (ages 6-8) at Baumhaus Harbour City

Spaces are limited and first-come, first-served, so sign up today via the Baumhaus website.

For more information about Baumhaus, their Kindermusik and Dramalab classes, and their playroom, check out their Facebook page.

Special Workshop: Board Game + Writing

Play & Write: Deep Sea Adventure

Mermaids, treasure, and amazing underwater creatures. In this unique summer creative writing and board game workshop, students will both write to play and play to write. Each of these 1-day sessions will feature different types of writing as students play a customised version of the board game "Deep Sea Adventure", designed in collaboration with Press Start Hong Kong.  On some days, students will be designing and writing about characters and objects as components for use in the game, while on other days, students will be playing the game and writing stories about what happens on their deep sea adventures. Each component that gets created in these workshops will become a permanent part of ECP's Deep Sea Adventure game set. The Deep Sea Adventure workshops will run for 4 days. Students can sign up for just one day, or all of them!
  • Day 1: Treasures
  • Day 2: Underwater Characters
  • Day 3: Legends of the Treasures
  • Day 4: Guardians of the Treasures

Creative Writing and Publishing Workshops

Friendly Phantoms

Ghosts tend to have a bad reputation. Many people think of them as scary or spooky, hiding in closets or under beds. But not all ghosts are out to get us! Like Casper the Friendly Ghost or the ghosts in Ghosts in the House by Kazuno Kohara, some ghosts are more than happy to lend a hand! In this workshop, students will create their own story about an amiable apparition!

The Land of Misfit Dragons

Everyone expects dragons to breathe fire and strike fear into the hearts of humans, but what if you’re a dragon who doesn’t fit in? Based on the picture book, Herb, the Vegetarian Dragon, students in this workshop will write about dragons who are finding it hard to live up to our scary expectations.

“Race you!” is a cry heard across playgrounds and parks the world over. Children relish the thrill of competition and devise all manner of races to try and outdo their friends. In this summer creative writing and publishing workshop, however, it’s not the kids who are competing, but their toys! Inspired by Shark vs. Train, students will write stories about what happens when rubber ducks, Lego and stuffed animals face off. Who would win a thumb war or a game of Scrabble?

  • This Fall, my daughter would like to sharpen her writing skills. I think ECP has inspired her to write better. Thanks for all of your effort.
  • Thanks for the writing report and your effort to make a "boring" writing class interesting. Your encouraging feedback will definitely energize my daughter to go further.
  • Elephant Community Press is an amazing organization with innovative ideas for encouraging young writers. Having her work published helped build my child’s sense of self-worth and having the proceeds of the books go to charity taught her about how her work can make a difference. My daughter has built her self-confidence and deepened her love for writing. This is hands down her favorite extracurricular activity — and as a side note, it has helped her enormously in school too!- Rosa Joshi, Parent
