The Other Dumptys

We all know about the tragic story of Humpty Dumpty, but did you know that his family tree is full of other amazing eggs? That's right! Great Uncle Dumpty was actually an amazing acrobat and Rumpty Dumpty was the first egg to fly solo around the world! In this Easter holiday creative writing and publishing workshop, students will create a new member of the Dumpty family and write a story that traces the origins of their unique talent.

Chinese New Year 2019

Writing & Art Workshops

Art + Writing Workshops

This Chinese New Year, we are running four of our special art and writing workshops for ages 6-8! Each 2.5-hour workshop is stand-alone, so students can sign up for one or all:
  • It's Not a... -- Inspired by Antoinette Portis' award-winning picture book, Not a Box, students re-imagine ordinary objects to create fantastic adventures for their character and make a book that includes pages to continue the fun at home.
  • Overheard -- Salt and Pepper are always together, Knife and Fork work hand in hand, and more often than not Saucer gives Cup a piggy back ride. There are many objects that are often found or used together, but how do they feel about that? Students think about a day in the life of some common object pairs and create comic book-style scenes to imagine the conversations you  might overhear between them.
  • Where's the Piggy? -- In honour of the Year of the Pig, students will hide a pig within a "Where's Wally?"-type scene and write clues about what it looks like and where it can be found. The challenge will be to be both descriptive and logical when writing the clues to make sure they're neither too easy nor too hard.  At the end of the workshop, students will take home a book containing their own and other participants’ pages so that they can challenge themselves and their friends or family members to find the hidden character on each page.
  • I Spy --Using various objects, students will each create a page containing various hidden items and then write clues about the objects the reader will need to find. At the end of the workshop, students will take home their very own I Spy book containing copies of their own and other participants’ pages, so that they can challenge themselves and their friends or family members to find the hidden objects.

ELI Level 1

Creative Writing and Publishing Workshops

Slices of Life

From Curious George to Angelina Ballerina, children love reading book after book about the many adventures of a favourite character. In this creative writing and publishing workshop, students work together to develop a character for their own series. Students look specifically at story structure and character development as they capture different slices of their character’s life.

The Trumpet: Creative Magazine Publishing

Students in these creative writing and magazine publishing workshops will be key contributors to ECP’s magazine, The Trumpet! Over the term, students will focus on four particular writing skills and write different text types, such as stories, newspaper articles and poems. They will revise and edit all of their pieces, but select their two favourites for publication in the magazine, which will be published in print! (For ages 6-11)

  • My daughter has enjoyed reading and writing very much since early childhood. She's always dreamed of becoming an author and having her own book to share with family, relatives and friends. She has made an obvious improvement in organising her work in the last few months. My wife and I thank you so much for your fruitful advice during and after the workshop.
  • Thanks very much once again for the wonderful program you have conducted in the school. The kids have enjoyed it thoroughly and of course learnt a lot. I can clearly see that my daughter has benefited from all the guidance and encouragement you have provided. There was a lot of personal attention given to each child, which is truly mazing given that these were group sessions.- Deepika Deshpande, Parent

  • I liked making the school magazine because it’s a great honour and I was very proud when I received it. Also, others could have a copy of the magazine too! I think the magazine is a good chance for us to show our writing and it’s a keepsake for us.- Karen, aged 11
