You can make a place as ordinary as a hotel lobby seem extraordinary by describing it through the perspective of an unusual character.

The resort was big and grand, complete with marble floors and chandeliers. She saw some people checking in and out at the reception. Wait. People? Lily had expected to see Egyptian mummies walking around, and vampires drinking blood in the cafe, instead of people eating chocolate cake and drinking coffee.
Lily shivered. This wasn’t what she had expected at all!
